April 13th turned out to be a Saturday steam up with a difference. Just for once
it was well attended by about 15 may be more members of those, Bob, Len, Jack, Allan
L, & Dave M bought there locomotives to play.
We were joined (by invitation ) by 8 or 10 members of the Wakefield Society of Model
Engineers, which included Jacquie & Phil Owen of the well known Blackgates Engineering
business. They in turn invited there friends who belong to the Crewe & South Chesterfield
Between them the visitors bought three 7 1/4” gauge locomotives, all of which steamed
faultlessly all day. The Owens had a recently refurbished Sweet William, Tony Bickerstaffe
had his Britannia with a possible rack of 6 coaches 4 were used in order to comply
with our signalling restrictions, the third locomotive was a 2-4-2 LMS Dart.
In the kitchen, Betty, Cathy & Sharon kept everyone supplied with teas coffees and
home made cakes. They were helped by Michelle & Dean to provided a brunch of pork
and stuffing baps, followed by a late lunch of jacket potato with chicken curry filling.
To finish off, those who could manage it had a slice of Betty’s delicious apple pie.
We were lucky with the weather, but there were a few spots of rain towards the end
of the day, by which time most people were ready to pack up and be on the way home.
Those members who did not attend on the 13th missed a most enjoyable day out.
